I am warning you right now- LET GO of your way of doing it! We are going new school here, which for us is understanding what really goes on when we multiply. We will be doing this a number of ways, and will be trying to help your student 'get' what is going on when we multiply! Hereeee's an example:
Remember, it is all about understanding!

Now, before you freak out, (jeez, did that just date me?) remember, it will be OK. Yes, you will get sick of hearing, "But, that's NOT how Mrs. Froehling showed us.." And I promise, your child will have understanding. Just be patient and don't get upset when you don't know what is going on, yet, your child arrives at the correct answer.
It will take practice and time, but we will get there! Now- help your child the most by getting those facts into 'automaticity'! That means WE KNOW THEM! Not just "I think I know them", but really getting them down. 8x7=56, quick as a snap! There's tons of videos and games out there, google and find what your child likes! That's why I am not putting one on here. You have to explore together and get what appeals to your specific kid!!! Thanks, Mrs. Froehling

Division for us is merely the other part of fact families in multiplication. Just like we learned in 1st grade, there are always 3 parts to a number sentence. In addition and subtraction, there were the parts we add to get a total, what we subtract from the sum to get the missing subtrahend and so on... Like this: So, now we are ready for the Multiply/Divide version: We will do a variety of things to help us understand how this works, such as arrays, groups and number in groups, sharing equally. Here's a great example: There is our introduction! But it will get a little more challenging, right after the break!
Thanks, Mrs. Froehling fractions on a number line...Here we go! Check this out. This is one of those things where we don't see a lot of this in real life, at least in this view. However, it is a very real skill! It just looks different...
Closest real life application? Measuring distance! All those eights, quarters, halves on measuring tapes! So keep practicing! Thanks, Mrs. Froehling |
