Remember these guys? Yes, the old 'comparing' symbols! Well, this week we are going to be working on comparing, but not just greater than, less than, or equal to! We are going to be comparing numbers up to 100,000 and we use them in many different ways. Open number lines. This is about being able to find number values on an empty number line and place them in correct areas. The number can be in standard form, expanded form, word form, Comparing whole numbers is going to get us ready for comparing numbers in other ways, such as comparing fractions and comparing decimals. (Please don't freak out about that, it is a ways down the road!)
The tricky part about this for us 3rd graders is that we can see a number in so many ways. And we need to be able to see it in as many ways possible in order to understand it. Example: 2,378 can be 8 ones, 3 hundreds, 7 tens and 2 thousands. It can also be 70+300+8+2,000. And how about 2x1000 + 8x1+ 3x100+7x10? And then the really tricky one: two thousand, three hundred, seventy eight. One of the problems many students have is carefully reading the number words. They tend to skip around, or guess at a number, only to find it was a digit off. We will be working hard on mastering this skill. Automaticity is the point at which something is automatic. When referring to memorization of the math facts, automaticity means that the student can recall a math fact without having to think about it! It will be a great week! Thanks, Mrs. Froehling Armed with our masks and scalpels (popsicle sticks) we tackled Place Value in many different ways, today! Expanded form, check! Expanded notation, check! Ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands! (Ask your student to sing the song!)
Your student should have brought home their number cards; they planned to try to trick you with their knowledge! Oh, no, I just realized I have been writing in all exclamation points. I do that when I am really excited about our learning! Don't forget, Thursday folder went home today, as well as conduct sheets. Both need a parent signature or initial. Please return tomorrow. Thanks! Mrs. Froehling We sent home some unfinished work today, that we just plain ran out of time in doing. Five or six students actually finished theirs in class, but the rest took his or her's home. It was work that connects to our place value goals.
Now, we have ongoing homework that involves our math facts in addition and subtraction- no multiplying yet! We want to attain automaticity in our facts. That means if I ask 19-7, they all can answer 12 in a second or two. Not in 10 or 20 seconds while they count it out in their head or on, yikes, our fingers! Just a reminder that we need those summer pics and forms turned in! Thanks! Mrs. Froehling First off, we don't go to a million. We only learn Place Value to 100,000. That being said, it is still a shock to some kids when we start learning bigger numbers. The craziest part is that we need to learn it so many ways!
1. Expanded form- see the chart? 2. Standard form or Ordinal form- see the chart! 3. Base 100 form- a little more challenging... 4. Word form- self explanatory, but don't forget, NO AND! 5. Expanded notation- not on the chart. Expanded notation looks like this: 3x1,000 + 5x100+ 2x10+ 9x1 Got it? We also have to compare those big numbers and find them on an open number line. What is an open number line? It's one without a beginning or end. It might not even have any numbers on it at all! This is just a little info- and soon I will try to put up a video that shows a little bit of what we are doing! Questions? Please contact me! Just a reminder- send those forms back! We need them by Friday! Thanks! Mrs. Froehling We had a friend come in late, and I didn't get his pic yet, but I will. We will also have a new friend in the morning!
Today was all about getting to know each other, and learning some of our rules, routines and procedures. We have a new lunch routine- ask your student about it! New hallway routines as well! In our classroom, we learned about how numbers and math are everywhere, and how if we know our basic numbers 0-9, we can tackle the rest!!! Want some math practice to get started? We really, really need those basic addition and subtraction facts down pat. In fact, that is called 'automaticity' and it is very important in understanding how to get to the good parts of how numbers work. So here's a couple of links: http://www.abcya.com/third_grade_computers.htm#numbers-cat. Here you can pick a game to play to help and think fast! https://www.ixl.com/math/grade-3 This one has a free limit of 10 each day. http://www.mathplayground.com/ Is always lots of fun as well! Apps- just search your phone, there are quite a few free ones that are just for addition and subtraction! So, have a great night, I will see you tomorrow! Mrs. Froehling Yay! I finally get to start with my new class and new grade! Just like my students! Here are a few things that students need to know for tomorrow! 1. Where our room is: Yes, yes, most of you already know. But we have some new friends! We are in the first hallway to the right after you pass through the cafeteria. We are at the end. 2. Be ready to have some fun and learn something new. 3. Know how you are getting home. That's it! I will take care of the rest! Parents: 1. You are welcome to walk your child in, and get them to our room. 2. Make sure they either have their lunch or that their account is set up. 3. You know that they know, how they are getting home! Our first day will be full of routines, how we do things, procedures and getting to know each other and the school. It will also jump right into some learning! Please send any completed paperwork that you might have finished from Meet the Teacher Night. Daily Communication A Daily Bulldog Folder will be coming home every night. It does not need to be initialed, but you will want to check it for notes, behaviors, anything that might need your attention. Check our previous post about 'Behavior Chart/Log" for more info. There will some new information about some changes made this year in our transportation, nurse, and checkout procedures, so please check the folder. Lunch account: your child will have a student ID. Please email me if you have questions about it. They will use it to access their account. You can also limit what extra things they buy with the paper that went home in your brown envelope. (yes, my personal child was treating all his friends to ice cream on Fridays, and we had to nip that in the bud!) One of the things we are asking for is a picture of your child or child and family from this summer, that we can post on the bulletin board in the hall. We have a space for each class and want to make a #3rdGradeFamily! Dismissal: Please remain in your car if your child is a car rider. We will bring them to your car, open the door and help them in. (At drop off in the morning, we have teachers help students out of the cars!). It doesn't matter what lane you are in. We ask that if, for any reason, you need to speak to a teacher or come into the building, please park! Use the crosswalk and come on in. Just a quick reminder that pick up time is not a time for a conference- I will be happy to talk with you after. We don't want to hamper the line, or slow down the process of getting all our kids dismissed! *State Law=No Cell Phone Use in School Zone* and that includes pick up and drop off. Tomorrow will be a great day! I am so excited! See you- Mrs. Froehling https://home.classdojo.com/#!/signup
This is our current calendar for the 1st 6 weeks. This sheet is our grade level's communication regarding daily behavior that parents will receive weekly in their child's Thursday folder. I try to put school events as well, but check the school website for updates! Sadly, this form does not have a piece for positive behavior, but your Class Dojo app will help with that!
