Well, it's time to talk geometry! And in 3rd grade in Texas, it's all about understanding what makes what and if makes sense! Sort of. Have you ever wondered where to get the down low on what your child really needs to know? I have, (I mean, as a parent of a child in a grade that I haven't taught)! Turns out, there's lots of ways. 1. The App Store: search TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) 1. Online: google TEKS. This site should pop up. It's the direct link to the State's list of TEKS. But here's the info in all it's specific glory! Now, you might be asking, "what in the world DOES that MEAN???" It basically tells us that we need to know alot about 2D and 3D figures, as well as what they can make, how they are made, and measuring them. We need to know things like what 'congruent' means. (Ask your student- that's a 2nd grade word, believe it or not) We are going to be practicing lots of polygons!
Keep up the practice on multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting. Algebraic reasoning, data analysis, and all the other things we have learned so far! Thanks! Mrs. Froehling

So we are continuing to work on function machines.
We are pretty good at addition rules, and subtraction rules, but when we hit multiply and divide?? (Shiver. Shake. Look for a trash can in case, well, you know... Just kidding. Sort of...not) What can we do to work on it? PRACTICE! As with all good math! If you don't do it, you won't get it! Here's some great sites for practicing!

We have a new Math Challenge going on in both classes!
Students are trying to get through their times tables in a weekly check that takes into account their level and goals. Homework is still a big question, with facts practice on the back. Thanks for helping your child learn and succeed! Mrs. F. This week we are starting algebraic functions! Yes! 3rd grade!!! Before you get all panicky, check out what this really means: Basically, we have to figure out what rule is happening with a function. Now, we start out easy- knowing the function but having to discover the answer we get with the function such as: It's C, because the rule is X10. Did you figure that out?
No worries, we will be practicing and playing games to get this idea down, and we have already been introduced to it in our Morning GPS practice! Thanks, Mrs. Froehling
Well, technically, we aren't!
The problems start when we see the information, but we don't label it (process it) and then when we start using it, we make mistakes with our calculations...
Nearly all students showed good understanding of the graph. But when we started talking about 'how many more were sold in March than in January', or 'how many were sold in February, March and January, it all went to pieces.
So, what to do? We are working on making our own pictographs and using them in different ways. This will help with understanding, especially when we make them in small group and I can give feedback as we are working. What can parents do? Help them practice, and here are some games with which to do that!
